3:42 pm - Crime Scene Instigation
At last, Let's Kill: Crime Scene Instigation is (or should be) available at your friendly local gaming store, with all new art from LK veteran Joe Rheaume and veteran artist Jeff Preston!

The great thing about CRIME SCENES is that you can MAKE YOUR OWN! Here's a link to the blurb from Atlas's Web site.

And if you missed out on getting your hands on a copy of the sold-out Let's Kill game, Atlas has done a second printing, so it should be available, too!

11:01 am - A Rose is a Rose is a Rose
I'm thinking to sell some games as PDFs on places like DriveThruRPG. It'll mostly be a "place" where I can sell some games, as well as a place for friends and family who have some games they want to put out there but don't want to bother setting up an account or shopping for publishers.

I need help, though: I can't think of a good name. "Sancho Games" is out, for various reasons. I don't want to call it "Aaron's Games" because they won't all be mine.

Anybody got any ideas?

4:47 pm - Putzin' and Futzin' Party
Our closing date on the condo is the 30th (we think), and we're throwing a sort of work party to do a bit of fixing and cleaning before we actually start moving in. We'll have beer (and soda) and pizza (and some Sarah baking if I can convince her).

Date and time are 03 July 2010, starting at 09:00 and going until whenever we're done and decide to stop hanging out and go somewhere else. If you're interested in coming, please RSVP for the address, and thanks!

4:59 pm - Am I Crazy or ...
... does it seem like BP is more interested in recovering crude oil than stopping the spill?

... does it seem like a company that posts news that the motion for immediate relief due to tardy filing of papers on said company's part was dismissed not actually look as good as one would think? I mean, I reckon when a judge forgives you for being a bit late on the paperwork, you shouldn't turn around and claim it means that you do things in a timely manner.

... does fixing the A/C in the car feel more important than saving the money for unforeseeable expenses related to buying a condo?

... would this whole illegal alien problem go away if we just started enforcing the laws on employers?

6:25 pm - Overheard in Class ...
Me: "Who can give me an example of a cyborg?"
Student A: "Cyborg from Teen Titans!"
Me: "Good. Others?"
Student B: "Seven of Nine!"
Student C: "Invader Zim!"
Student D: "Darth Vader!"
Student E: "Teletubbies!"
Me: ...
Student E: *grin*
Me: "Oooookay ... I can't really argue with that."

1:37 pm - A Madman with a Box
Steven Moffat has become a whole lot more lickable. I may have made audible squee noises when I saw the previews for series five (or one, or however they're numbering it).

4:19 pm - Oo Mao Mao, Oo Oo Oo Mao Mao
Today I taught my second Computational Thinking class how to play Mao. At one point, the class was split up into groups of four to six to play their own games. About half way through the lesson, this happened:

Me: (loudly) "Hey, what's today's date?"
A number of students: "It's the 17th."
A number of other students: "Talking!" (passes a card)
A number of students: *grumble*
Me: "Bwahahahaha!"

I do love my job.

2:42 pm - Hallowed
Apologies in advance to those who are not computer geeks.

I taught my Advanced Placement class about inheritance this week. I started by explaining Plato's concept of forms and how at the top of that particular structure is The Divine (theios). They came back yesterday with this:

5:58 am - Talking to Teenagers
Is there anybody on this list who works in some form of IT and would be interested in coming in to talk to a bunch of teenagers about their job? If so, lemme know. You'd be talking to my newbies, who meet from 08:15 to 09:50; if you also talk to my Advanced Placement class, I'll take you out to lunch afterward.

Disclaimer: depending on volunteer turnout, I might not be able to fit you in. I'll be giving preferential treatment toward women in the industry, because I really want to encourage more women in the industry.

Thanks.

Mao as a lesson for Computational Thinking. Good idea? Bad idea? Crazy? Discuss.

6:20 am - Why Didn't You Guys Tell Us?
So, in case you're thinking about getting married, elope. Seriously. They don't tell you some things. You won't be able to invite everyone you want, and you'll feel guilty about it. Food is stupid expensive, and so is renting ANYTHING you might need, including chairs, tables, tablecloths (?!), etc. Nothing will go right. Rings take six weeks to be delivered (unless you can buy the display model, so we lucked out there). I've run LARPs before, so I figured this wouldn't be too much different (corollary to that: I'm dumb). Something you really want to attend will happen on the same day as the one you pick to get married.

If I didn't have the best partner in the entire world suffering along with me, I'd have given this shtick up a month ago.

4:34 pm - Music Man
A student suggested Cat Power, so I dialed her up on Pandora and started listening to her and her style. After about twenty minutes or so, I thought, "Let's throw in a bit of variety into the mix." What two bands' styles immediately leaped to mind to complement a mellow rock and R&B style? Why, Royal Crown Revue and Alien Sex Fiend, of course!

There is something wrong with me.

10:32 pm - State of the Art
I was chatting with some of my advanced CS students, and they told me that my predecessor taught them to make while loops by starting with "while(true)" and using one or more break statements within the loop. My immediate reaction was to recoil in horror, but then I wondered if the concept of structured programming hasn't evolved and/or mutated since I was elbow-deep in it.

Could someone with more recent experience in the industry tell a guy who's been studying education for the past two years whether his revulsion is justified?

EDIT: Okay, good, I'm not that out of touch. =i)

Tomorrow, I get my picture taken for a "READ" poster for school. Question: with what book should I pose?

5:43 am - Musical Priest
My brother, who has done far more research into my family and its history than I have, tells me that our ancestors had an interesting tradition. It seems that the first-born son entered the clergy, and the second was the heir.

I'm not sure what happened if a generation only had one male child. Maybe they just kept trying. Maybe they adopted. Dunno.

I was just thinking this morning that this tradition may hold true more than I initially believed.
